What is Power Quality Assessment? Why is it so important?

Poor power quality can lead to costly systematic disruption, downtime, and equipment failures. We offer expert consultation and assessment on a range of power quality topics, in accordance with industry standards and best practices. Our team of certified electricians will investigate your power quality status, identify any problems, and propose long-term solutions.

Do I Need a Power Quality Assessment?

The following symptoms may be a sign of underlying power quality issues:

  • Partial electrical process or equipment failures

  • Complete production stoppage

  • Overheating of equipment motors or transformers

  • Equipment malfunctions and shutdowns

Power quality issues often go unnoticed when these and other problems are attributed to the equipment itself, or other incorrect causes. Oftentimes, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

Fortunately, the cost of the assessment and then addressing power quality performance issues is far less than failure costs associated with downtime and replacing high-ticket equipment items.

What a PQA Includes

Our power quality assessments include a comprehensive analysis of your electrical system. This often includes:

  • Measurement of single and three phase voltages and currents (fundamental and harmonic orders), power, energy, power factor, frequency and transients

  • G5/4 compliance and system resonance analysis

  • Investigation of the harmonic effects of power system loads

  • Distorting load impact assessments

  • Harmonic studies (Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and individual harmonics)

  • Flicker evaluation

  • Voltage unbalance analysis

Following our analysis, our report will include recommendations for effective solutions to resolve the quality issues, advice on how to reduce long-term risk to your operations, and training on managing your power quality.
