Thanksgiving Safety Tips from A.F. Smith Electric

This Thanksgiving, the A.F. Smith Electric team wants to make sure you and your family are as safe as possible, in and out of the kitchen.

  • Test your smoke detectors to make sure they are all in working order. If they are outdated or aren’t working, get new ones installed properly before the big day arrives.

  • Never leave the kitchen unattended when food is cooking. You should not cook if you are sleepy or under the influence of alcohol. Children should also be closely supervised and kept at least three feet away from all cooking appliances.

  • Don’t overload your electrical outlets with multiple appliances while cooking.

  • Unplug any appliances that are not being used.

  • Keep an eye out for any electrical cords that could be dangling from your countertop. These are hazards for young children or pets to pull and play with.

  • Test your GFCI outlets in the kitchen to make sure they are in working order. Even the self-tested kind should be tested once a month.

  • Replace any electric appliances that have damaged or frayed cords.

  • Prevent fires by making sure your oven and stovetop are clean and free of grease and dust. You should also clean the exhaust hood and duct over the stove regularly.

  • Use a kitchen timer to make sure your dish doesn’t become a safety hazard.

Follow the tips above to ensure the one item you include on the menu is SAFETY.
