We love highlighting the outstanding members of our team. This month, we are spotlighting Service Representative Doug Lentz.
What was your path to the electrical trade?
I worked as an apprentice for an electrician through an engineering college in northern Michigan. Then I went to college at Central Michigan University and eventually ended up in Kansas and worked in marketing. In 2008, the marketing industry became rocky. My wife and I had started a family, so I needed to find something more stable. That’s when I came back to electrical work.
What brought you back to Michigan?
Family. All the grandparents, aunts and uncles are here, so it was important to us to get back to Michigan.
What was your first role at A.F. Smith?
I was a residential electrician when I first joined the team.
How does A.F. Smith compare to where you’ve worked previously?
A.F. Smith has a great work atmosphere. It’s also larger than other companies I’ve worked for, which allows us to have parts and equipment readily available. That’s a huge plus.
How do you feel about your new role, and what does your job look like now?
I enjoy contacting customers and making them happy. I’m responsible for scheduling, bidding and estimating. I’m sure the role will expand as time goes on. My background sets me up in a unique way to fill this role. I’ve had a lot of experience in the office, on the phones and working with customers, so this is a great fit.
What do you want people to know about A.F. Smith?
We have excellent electricians. Some of them have been with us for over 30 years. We have the equipment to handle the job that we need to do, and to do it right. I’m very proud of our work.
